ATTIC FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM FLOOD AND FREEZE EXPERT WITNESS

Clark Engineering is frequently retained by legal professionals to provide expert knowledge and forensic engineering services. Forensic engineering projects typically have the following scope:

  • Failure mode review – building systems review and inspection and documentation of the failure site(s)
  • Research – extensive review of installation requirements and dialogue with equipment and material manufacturers
  • Analysis – comparison of the as-built conditions to the manufacturer installation requirements. Review of available design documentation
  • Compilation – gathering of the relevant information including documentation and archiving
  • Presentation – demonstration of the relevant, archived information by report and/or audible presentation

On this occasion, Clark Engineering was retained to review the accidental flooding of an unheated attic space fire suppression system that froze, ruptured, and caused substantial building damage when it thawed. The forensics included significant review of the fire suppression system, the maintenance reports, research into model specific dry valve operation, analysis and compilation of the results for presentation.
